All kinds of questions are welcomed. HI all,

I will probably going to Essex too for my graduated studies. Was very attracted to the fact that this Uni has few Malaysians students. Took my undergrad somewhere else and we also had very small Malaysians community (30 ppl only). One of the best experience i ever had.

I am funding the tuition fee on my own (i.e bank loan), no luck with scholarships application yet. So definitely on a tight budget! :)

I saw the towers for couple on the website and it cost roughly 136.46 per will (utilities included)
Is it cheaper to stay off campus with the same facilities? Is it awalking distance to campus?

Does Essex has co-rec (gym) for its students for free? Or do we have to join independent gym?

What about electronic and IT stuff? cheaper? need to buy adapter?

Oh yeah, what is the best way to get to essex if you bringing a lot of stuff

Thank you in advance

Regards

Dear Diana,
wah! HaPpy=)....lots of people are planning to come here....heheheh...

I would say that the tower -couple room, is cheap actually!great bargain!
save transportation cost....
need no worries on bills....
For couple room at tower, you'll get
-kitchen with all racilities incl fridge, freezer...etc
-internet connection
-phone connected within uni-can make free call within uni. but need to buy 'dog n bone card' to make a call to other part of uni.
-heater . will make you warm on winter.would not freeze to death when winter comes.=)
-what else?well,that's what i know.

accomodation off-campus would cost more.its within walking distance, but depends on which area(wivenhoe, greendstead etc) you choose to live. Most of the families with 2,3 and 4 kids live off-campus as there is no accomodation being offered family with kids.

the gym is under sports centre.
need to pay to use the facilities.
The sports centre has some facilities. you can check this outhttp://www.essex.ac.uk/sport/

well, I am used to go to the sport centre for-squash, badminton, gym, sauna....

To get here? and bring lots of stuff? hmmm....it depends on which part of UK u are now...
Maybe you can hired a car. I don't know....Perhaps you can get in touch wth some of the people here,to get more info on this. Do email me. nahmadb@essex.ac.uk.
I'l give their contact no. later.

Hope this help.

Warm Regards,
Norzakiah

hi diana,

if you want to cut cost you can pick the option without the living room in the towers. saves you about 100 quid a month. it's a bit small though.

anywhere on campus would be good though. convenience aside it helps integrate you with the uni life. more chance of meeting students, etc. if you're here for your phd, can move out lah in 2nd and 3rd year.

hmm but if your husband wants to work in town , then living off campus may be better. might want to consider hythe area, it's halfway between uni and town centre, so if you walk either way its 20 minutes.

small IT stuff like ext hard drive, mp3 player etc get from msia cheaper. here all electronics are taxed 17.5%. there's a mailing list on the university with many ppl selling 2nd hand stuff. things like printer/scanner can buy on the mailing list. it's quite a regular item for sale actually. adapter? i think not necessary. they use the same plugs as we do in msia.

carrying stuff? hmm. i'm assuming this is from msia. if so just ship them over lah to the uni as soon as you confirm your accomodation and address. dont bring on plane.. not only are they stricter with the weight limit these days, you'd also have to lug everything from airport to uni. if this happens tho, just let me know and i can arrange for ppl to meet you at the airport to help you.

a taxi from heathrow to uni is about 100 pounds i think. there's also a direct national express bus service here, if i'm not mistaken.

if this is from somewhere else in uk, just rent a car and drive over with a fren lah (so he/she can drive it back!)
